Heathrow Airport has been overtaken by Istanbul Airport as Europe’s busiest, with the latter accommodating more passengers in July. Istanbul Airport reported handling 8.15 million passengers, while Heathrow saw 7.86 million travelers during the same period. This shift comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers compared to July of the previous year, a decline partly blamed on disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict. In contrast, Istanbul Airport enjoyed a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The changing dynamics between the two airports have added pressure on the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s proposed expansion. The airport, which currently operates two runways that are nearly at full capacity, is pushing for a £33 billion project to build a third runway. This expansion could potentially elevate Heathrow’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, thereby enhancing the UK’s international connectivity, trade, and tourism prospects.
Istanbul Airport, which has been operational since 2018, benefits from a larger site and continuous operation throughout the day. It currently has three runways, with a fourth one scheduled to be operational by the end of 2026. The airport’s ability to expand and handle increasing passenger numbers highlights its growing significance in European aviation.
Amid these developments, other UK airports also reported significant passenger numbers. London Stansted and Manchester airports both experienced their busiest July ever, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester managing 3.4 million. These figures underscore the rising demand for air travel and the need for infrastructure improvements in the UK.
