Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has stepped down following the narrow victory of the centre-left opposition in Sweden’s general election. With preliminary results showing the opposition securing 176 seats, three more than Kristersson’s right-leaning coalition, Social Democrats leader Magdalena Andersson is now tasked with forming a new government.
As she begins negotiations, Andersson faces the challenge of collaborating with multiple opposition parties, including the Left, Centre, and Green parties. Although these discussions mark a shift in Sweden’s political landscape, differences in policy areas such as taxation, immigration, and climate policy could present significant hurdles.
In her response to the election outcome, Andersson highlighted the electorate’s desire for a new direction, pointing to priorities like climate policy, education, healthcare, elderly care, and immigration. Her ability to forge a stable governing arrangement will be critical in addressing these issues as she seeks broad support across the political spectrum.
Kristersson, who has been in office since 2022, officially tendered his resignation, prompting the parliamentary speaker to initiate the process of government formation. The Sweden Democrats, previously the country’s second-largest party and a supporter of Kristersson’s government, experienced a decline in support, dropping to third place.
Sweden’s parliamentary system often sees minority governments relying on agreements with other parties to maintain power. Andersson is expected to pursue such alliances to ensure a stable administration, a common practice in the nation’s political framework.
