Sweden’s red-green opposition has emerged with a narrow lead in the parliamentary elections, securing 176 seats in the Riksdag against the Tidö parties’ 173 seats, according to preliminary results. This development could potentially signal a shift in Sweden’s political landscape as final vote counts are awaited.
The Social Democrats, a key component of the red-green bloc, garnered 28.0% of the vote, earning them 99 seats. Meanwhile, the Moderates captured 19.8% of the vote, translating to 70 seats, positioning them as a significant force within the Tidö coalition. The Sweden Democrats received 17.5% of the vote, securing 62 seats and reflecting their continued influence in Swedish politics.
Other parties made notable gains and losses. The Left Party, part of the opposition, increased its representation with 30 seats after securing 8.4% of the vote, marking a gain of six seats since the previous election. The Center Party won 7.0% of the vote and took 25 seats, while the Christian Democrats and the Green Party both claimed 22 seats, with 6.2% and 6.1% of the vote, respectively. The Liberals completed the lineup with 5.3% of the vote and 19 seats.
Voter turnout stood at 84.8%, showing a slight increase from the previous election in 2022. However, the election also saw the Social Democrats and Sweden Democrats lose ground, with reductions of eight and 11 seats, respectively, compared to their earlier performances.
These results are still subject to change as the final vote count progresses, which includes additional checks that could alter the current distribution of seats. The outcome will determine the balance of power in Sweden’s political scene and the direction of its governance policies moving forward.
