IMF Increases Netherlands’ 2026 Growth Forecast to 1.5% Amid Inflation Concerns

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its forecast for the Netherlands’ economic growth, projecting a 1.5% expansion in 2026. This marks an increase from the previous estimate of 1% made in July. Despite this upward revision, the Dutch economy continues to face challenges from persistent inflation and high energy costs, which are expected to exert pressure on consumers in the coming years.

The IMF’s improved outlook for the Netherlands is partly attributed to stronger-than-expected economic growth in Germany, which has seen its 2026 growth forecast raised from 0.7% to 1.3%. Additionally, global investments in artificial intelligence technology are anticipated to bolster economic activity, contributing to this optimistic revision.

However, inflation remains a significant concern. Consumer prices in the Netherlands are expected to increase by 2.9% in 2026, driven largely by ongoing pressure from energy and fuel costs. The inflation rate had already reached 3.4% in September, continuing an upward trend that began in July.

Fuel prices, in particular, have surged, with diesel prices rising by 27.2% over the past year, nearing €2.50 per litre. While some relief has been noted in other areas, such as a 1.9% decline in food prices, the overall cost of living remains elevated.

The IMF also highlighted the impact of geopolitical tensions, specifically noting the conflict in Iran, which has affected fuel prices. However, this impact has been somewhat mitigated by countries securing alternative oil and gas suppliers. Despite these efforts to stabilize supply, high prices continue to pose challenges for Dutch households.

As the Netherlands navigates these economic conditions, the IMF’s revised forecast offers a cautiously optimistic view of growth prospects, tempered by the ongoing realities of inflation and energy costs.
