President Donald Trump has accused Canada of “fraudulently” using a clip of Ronald Reagan in an ad, and has “terminated” all trade negotiations as a result.
The ad, from Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Reagan criticizing tariffs. Trump called this “egregious behavior” in a post on social.
He claimed the “fake” ad was an attempt to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his 35% tariffs on Canadian goods like steel and timber.
The ad has also been condemned by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the former president’s full message.
The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes a vital trade relationship, as over 75% of Canadian exports go to the us.
