In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia executed a comprehensive missile and drone assault on Kyiv early Monday, resulting in at least nine fatalities and injuring 46 individuals, including five children, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attack prompted ongoing rescue operations, with officials cautioning that the number of casualties could rise further.
The nighttime barrage inflicted severe damage on residential areas throughout the Ukrainian capital. Emergency services reported that at least 15 apartment buildings were either damaged or destroyed. Among the hardest hit was a nine-story residential building in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district, where rescue workers are actively attempting to extricate individuals trapped beneath the debris.
In addition to the devastation in Kyiv, one fatality was reported in the Bucha district, located northwest of the capital. Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged the operation, describing it as a “massive” strike that employed long-range missiles and drones. The ministry claimed the targets included military, energy, and airfield infrastructure in Kyiv and various other regions across Ukraine.
This latest offensive follows closely on the heels of another significant Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital just days prior, which claimed at least 27 lives, marking it as one of the deadliest assaults on Kyiv this year. The cumulative impact of these attacks has exacerbated the already dire situation in the city.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed ongoing combat operations in the Donetsk region, specifically around the strategic town of Kostyantynivka. He dismissed Russian assertions that the town has been seized, underscoring the persistent and intense nature of the conflict in the area.
