Sweden and Ukraine have signed a letter of intent to create a joint weapons development hub in Ukraine, marking a significant step toward deepening defense cooperation between the two nations. The partnership will focus on advancing new battlefield technologies and sharing military expertise drawn from both countries’ strengths.
Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson announced that Swedish specialists will work directly in Ukraine, combining Sweden’s experience in advanced weapons design with Ukraine’s extensive combat knowledge. He said the collaboration would enhance both nations’ defense capabilities and accelerate innovation in modern warfare technology.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed that multiple agreements and contracts are already underway between Swedish and Ukrainian defense firms but withheld company names for security reasons. He emphasized that cooperation would begin as soon as possible, with a focus on long-term industrial collaboration.
The two sides also advanced talks regarding Sweden’s Gripen E fighter jets. A new working group will explore options for Ukraine to acquire up to 150 of the aircraft. Funding options include frozen Russian assets, Swedish contributions, European support, and international financing. Shmyhal said Ukraine is ready to send pilots and mechanics for training in Sweden and has requested older Gripen models to help defend Ukrainian airspace next year.
