Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer has urged the European Union to strengthen cooperation with countries beyond its borders to more effectively combat international criminal networks. Speaking at an EU justice meeting in Luxembourg, Strömmer emphasized that coordinated action is essential to address transnational crime and enhance Europe’s legal and policing partnerships.
During the meeting, Strömmer engaged with Spain’s Ministers of Justice and the Interior to gain insights and establish contacts with North African law enforcement, particularly in Morocco, ahead of his planned visit in November. Spain’s extensive experience working with the region is seen as a valuable model for Sweden’s outreach efforts.
Strömmer also proposed that Eurojust, the EU’s judicial cooperation agency, should take the lead in building official ties between EU prosecutors and non-EU counterparts. He noted that smaller member states, like Sweden, face challenges in establishing such networks independently and would benefit from a centralized EU-led framework.
The initiative aims to improve cross-border investigations, streamline cooperation, and strengthen Europe’s ability to dismantle organized criminal networks operating internationally.
