Norway is urging significant reforms within the United Nations, citing a critical need for changes amid escalating global challenges. Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, highlighting issues such as declining respect for international law, waning confidence in multilateral efforts, financial constraints, and institutional inefficiencies facing the organization.
Eide underscored Norway’s support for the UN80 reform initiative, which aims to streamline mandates, eliminate redundancies, and enhance the UN’s effectiveness. He called for structural changes, including the consolidation of UN bodies that have overlapping responsibilities. Additionally, Norway is advocating for a more robust and autonomous UN secretary-general, as well as reforms to the UN Security Council to increase transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in its decision-making processes. Eide pointed out the absence of a permanent African member as a significant reason for reforming the council’s composition.
The minister described the current scenario as a “triple crisis,” with numerous ongoing conflicts, financial issues stemming from delayed or withheld contributions, and institutional complexities within the UN. He emphasized the urgency of maintaining international cooperation on climate and environmental concerns alongside efforts to resolve wars and geopolitical tensions.
Eide urged UN member states to transition from discussions and reports to implementing tangible reforms. He argued that stronger international institutions are crucial to effectively addressing the challenges confronting the global community.
