Greece maintained its lead in the Nations League group after a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in Thessaloniki on Thursday. The match saw Greece initially dominate, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half before the Netherlands mounted a comeback in the second half.
Fotis Ioannidis put Greece ahead in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a header from Giorgos Masouras. Just before halftime, Masouras extended Greece’s lead, finishing from close range after Ioannidis seized on a poor backpass by the Netherlands to create the scoring opportunity.
The Netherlands regrouped after the break, with Virgil van Dijk narrowing the gap in the 59th minute by heading in a corner from Joey Veerman. Despite a crucial late save by Greece goalkeeper Konstantis Tzolakis, the Netherlands managed to equalize in the 89th minute when Tijjani Reijnders scored from close range.
The result leaves Greece atop the group with seven points, two points ahead of the Netherlands. Greece will next face Germany at home on Sunday.
