Balanced Stress Enhances Focus, Builds Resilience, Experts Reveal

While stress is often linked to negative outcomes like burnout and anxiety, health experts suggest that not all stress is detrimental. Short-term stress, sometimes known as eustress or positive stress, can actually enhance focus, increase motivation, and improve performance when tackling significant challenges.

Certified happiness coach Farheen Belgaumwala explains that healthy stress typically arises before events such as job interviews, public presentations, exams, or when acquiring new skills. Although it can lead to temporary physical symptoms like a fast heartbeat or sweaty palms, this type of stress can sharpen concentration, aid in problem-solving, and boost confidence once the challenge is successfully met.

The issue arises when stress becomes chronic, offering little time for recovery. Prolonged stress, stemming from factors like heavy workloads, uncertainty, unrealistic expectations, poor communication, or lack of emotional support, can have adverse effects on both mental and physical health. Without adequate recovery time, chronic stress can diminish productivity, compromise emotional well-being, and raise the risk of burnout.

Experts caution that the body often exhibits early warning signs of excessive stress before individuals become fully aware of it. Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, sleep difficulties, frequent headaches, irritability, concentration issues, emotional exhaustion, and a constant sense of tension may signal that stress levels have become unhealthy.

Achieving a healthy balance doesn’t necessarily require drastic changes. Simple actions like taking short breaks during the day, spending time in nature, practicing deep breathing exercises, setting realistic boundaries, ensuring adequate sleep, and seeking support from trusted friends, family, or mental health professionals can effectively manage stress. Recognizing the difference between beneficial and harmful stress empowers individuals to remain productive while safeguarding their long-term well-being.
