Sweden’s economy experienced a slowdown in the third quarter of 2023, with a gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 0.4% compared to the previous quarter, as reported by Statistics Sweden. This deceleration was largely due to a contraction in economic activity recorded in September, highlighting a weakening trend towards the end of the quarter.
Despite the downturn in September, economist Neda Shahbazi noted that strong growth in August helped to sustain the quarterly expansion. The overall economic performance in the third quarter indicates a gradual loss of momentum for Sweden as the period progressed.
Year-on-year comparisons paint a more favorable picture, with Sweden’s GDP increasing by 2.8% compared to the same period last year. This suggests that the economy remains larger than it was a year ago, despite the recent monthly decline in September.
The latest figures underscore the challenges facing Sweden’s economy as it navigates fluctuating conditions. While the growth in August provided a temporary boost, the contraction in September signals potential headwinds in sustaining economic expansion going forward.
