In a move to secure vital parliamentary support for the upcoming budget, Dutch opposition parties Pro and Volt have aligned themselves in budget negotiations with Prime Minister Rob Jetten’s minority government. The coalition aims to influence changes in social security and household cost policies.
Prime Minister Jetten announced that his cabinet has crafted a new proposal to address opposition concerns, focusing on welfare, living costs, and the replacement of the “Box 3” asset tax system. The collaboration between Pro and Volt is seen as a strategic effort to bolster government support in both parliamentary houses, as stated by Pro leader Jesse Klaver.
The coalition’s internal dynamics are under pressure, particularly regarding the extent of concessions on welfare policy. The VVD, a key party in the governing coalition, has expressed concerns about extensive welfare policy changes. Meanwhile, Pro is advocating for a reversal of planned welfare reductions. Finance Minister Eelco Heinen has already agreed to either postpone or cancel around half of the €6 billion in welfare cuts planned in the coalition agreement, yet Pro is pushing for further amendments.
On the other side of the political spectrum, right-wing opposition parties are demanding deeper welfare cuts and tax reductions. The government is also engaging with ChristenUnie, which is focused on assisting households in managing the increasing energy and food costs.
Negotiations are set to continue with other opposition entities, including JA21, SGP, 50Plus, and BBB, as the government seeks to build enough parliamentary support to pass its budget proposals. The outcome of these talks could significantly impact the government’s ability to navigate its budget through parliament effectively.
