The Netherlands, alongside Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and Finland, is advocating for significant reductions to the European Union’s proposed budget for 2028–2034. These six countries, which contribute more to the EU budget than they receive, argue that the nearly €2 trillion plan would lead to an unsustainable rise in EU spending and impose a disproportionate financial burden on major net contributors.
The proposal has sparked divisions among EU member states. While the Netherlands and its allies push for a leaner budget, other countries, such as Spain and Italy, are lobbying for stronger funding protections for poorer regions and sectors like agriculture, supporting a more expansive budget overall.
Negotiations among EU member states are expected to continue ahead of a leaders’ summit scheduled for October. The final budget requires the agreement of all 27 EU countries, adding complexity to the discussions as each member state seeks to address its own priorities and concerns.
