A new direct gas pipeline connecting Norway and the Netherlands is set to advance following the successful completion of a feasibility study. North Sea pipeline operator Nogat is now set to further develop critical aspects of the project, such as its transport capacity. This new infrastructure aims to offer an alternative route for Norwegian gas, enhancing the reliability of supply in case of disruptions in existing pipeline connections.
Scheduled to commence operations in 2029, the pipeline is projected to have a capacity exceeding 4 billion cubic meters of gas annually, which would account for approximately 15% of the Netherlands’ total gas needs. As domestic energy production declines, this development is seen as crucial for bolstering energy security, especially as Europe seeks to lessen its reliance on suppliers from geopolitically unstable regions.
Nogat has highlighted the ease with which the new pipeline can be integrated into the existing Norwegian offshore gas system. According to Nogat Director Falco van Wissen, Norwegian gas, which currently constitutes about a third of Europe’s gas imports, is also a cleaner alternative compared to LNG imports.
The construction of the pipeline is part of a broader strategy to secure energy resources within Europe, especially in light of fluctuating global politics and energy markets. The project partners anticipate finalizing the necessary investment decisions by the middle of next year, setting the stage for the pipeline to become a key component of the region’s energy infrastructure.
